Feeding mechanisms in Animals

The animals have four types of mechanisms they use to feed. These are:

1. Filter feeding- In this mechanism, the organism filters small food particles or organisms. This is seen in aquatic animals and is also known as suspension feeders. Example: Humpback whale which has comblike baleens on upper jaw that filter small fishes and other organisms from water.

2. Substrate feeding- In this mechanism, the organism lives on or inside their food source and feeds through the soft tissues. Example: leaf miner caterpillars and maggots.

3. Fluid feeding- In this mechanism, organism feeds on fluids such as blood in animals and nectar in plants. Example: Mosquito, hummingbird and bees.

4. Bulk feeding- In this mechanism, organisms eat large pieces of food by using body parts like claws, tentacles, and teeth. Example: Humans and Snake.
