The Green Institute is an independent sustainability organization dedicated to promoting sustainability and driving progress on environmental issues. Through our research, initiatives, and educational programs, we aim to empower people, drive innovation, and build resilient communities. Our thematic focus areas include education, environment, energy, equity, and economics, and we work with a variety of stakeholders including students, professionals, policymakers, and community leaders to drive positive change in these areas. Whether through our leadership programs, fellowships, conferences, or community service events, we strive to engage, educate, and inspire individuals to take action and make a difference in the world.

OUR APPROACH

Education

We offer a range of education programs and resources focused on promoting sustainability and empowering individuals to take action. These include conferences and events such as the World Environment Day Symposium and World Sustainability Conference, as well as leadership programs and fellowships that support the development of values-based leaders. We also offer nanodegrees in Early Childhood Education for Sustainability, Sustainable Food Production: An Interdisciplinary Approach, and the Principles of Green and Sustainability Science, which provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their careers and make a positive impact on the world.

Advocacy

We work to drive change on global and domestic challenges through initiatives that raise awareness and advocate for sustainable policies and practices. This includes the Green Room, in which experts and leaders reflect, connect, and share ideas, and our international partnerships in 11 nations that address global challenges and develop civil society.


Innovation

We promote innovative thinking and solutions through media resources and our commitment to staying at the forefront of research and developments in the field of sustainability. This includes conducting research in our thematic focus areas of Education, Environment, Energy, Equity, and Economics (E5).


OUR IMPACT

Our Impact

Since its inception in 2015, the Green Institute has had a significant impact on environmental issues and sustainability in Nigeria and beyond. Through its three pillars of education, advocacy, and innovation, the Green Institute has trained over 25,000 sustainability leaders, hosted over 100 events, and taken over 2,500 pledges to promote sustainability.

Some of the notable achievements of the Green Institute include:

  • Advocating for the adoption of sustainable energy policies in Nigeria

  • Launching a campaign to reduce plastic pollution and promote the use of reusable products

  • Partnering with local organizations to launch initiatives to protect and preserve Nigeria's biodiversity

  • Hosting a World Environment Day Symposium, featuring sustainability experts from around the world

  • Launching Adenike Akinsemolu's book, "The Principles of Green and Sustainability Science" published by Springer.

  • Promoting sustainable agriculture practices through the use of organic fertilizers and regenerative farming techniques

  • Advocating for stronger building codes and the adoption of resilient infrastructure to address the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters

  • Conducting research and engaging in active dialogue on sustainability issues in its thematic focus areas of education, environment, energy, equity, and economics.
