The Green Digest: Nigeria Endsars Protest and other pressing issues

GREEN DAILY DIGEST AFRICA: As the #EndSARS protest continues unabated, renowned hack-tivists, Anonymous have shown their ingenuity once again by hacking into the official website of Central Bank of Nigeria and the twitter account of National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) as a form of cyber protest. Although the ethical reasons behind all these can be debated, but it seems like the protesters are gaining momentum and solidarity around the world. The wife of Lagos state governor, Nigeria, Dr. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, speaking at this year’s International Day of Rural Women, emphasized the need for girls and rural women to be resilient against climate change. She urged stakeholders to pay more attention to the needs and challenges of this vulnerable group as they are contributors to socioeconomic development. In Zimbabwe, a farming project for rural innovation has failed due to inconsistency with local contexts. There are various rural complexities and peculiarities that must be taken into consideration before rural agricultural innovations will be successful. Therefore, for policy intervention, research and innovations to be deemed fit; the ideologies and contexts of the locale must be prioritized. COVID-19: In the United States, the daily average Coronavirus infection is equivalent to about 55, 000 new cases. However, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci says that things would have to get "really, really bad" for him to advocate for a national lockdown. CLIMATE CHANGE: The severity of climate change is unarguably one of the most debilitating of global human crises. A recent survey by Pew Research Center, a US-based non- partisan think tank reveals that in spite of the fatalities of the pandemic, a lot of people are of the opinion that the negative impacts of climate change remains a priority. According to the report, “A median of 70% across 14 countries surveyed over the summer say climate change is a major threat to their country. A similar median, 69%, say the same of the spread of infectious diseases.” CIRCULAR ECONOMY: Europe is gaining traction in their bid to implement a circular economy. Sadly, an average European has an ecological foot print of 4.7 global hectares per person, as against the global biocapacity of 1.7 global hectares per person. This would require three more earths to sustain human population if we all expended the same ecological footprints.
