On December 11, 2025, the Officially Green Fellowship Program hosted a mentorship session with Dr. Helen Onyeaka, Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. The virtual session focused on the theme “Science to Society: Communicating Research for Real-World Impact.”

Dr. Onyeaka emphasized that strong research alone is not enough to create meaningful change. Researchers must be able to communicate their findings clearly to policymakers, communities, industry, and other non-specialist audiences. She encouraged Fellows to understand their audience, avoid unnecessary jargon, use relatable examples, and explain why their research matters in everyday life.

The session introduced practical communication approaches, including the “Why–How–What” structure and the “Problem–Journey–Solution” storytelling framework. Fellows were also encouraged to identify the central message they want their audience to remember and build their communication around it.

A key message from the session was the importance of clarity, connection, and credibility. Dr. Onyeaka highlighted that effective science communication can build trust, encourage collaboration, inform better decisions, and help research move beyond academic publications toward real-world impact.

The interactive mentorship session reinforced the Green Fellowship Program’s commitment to equipping emerging leaders and researchers with practical skills for creating positive change in society.
