On March 20, 2026, the Officially Green Fellowship Program hosted a mentorship session with Prof. Patrick P. Walsh, Vice President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Director of the SDG Academy. The session focused on “Translating Research into Policy and Advocacy.”
Prof. Walsh explored the persistent gap between academic research and real-world decision-making, noting that valuable research often remains within journals instead of influencing governments, businesses, and communities. He encouraged researchers to go beyond publication by actively engaging policymakers, institutions, and other stakeholders.
Drawing from his own experience, he explained how research can contribute to legislative change when academics work closely with government officials and remain involved throughout the policy process. He emphasized that meaningful impact may take years and requires persistence, partnerships, and a willingness to communicate research in ways decision-makers can use.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of open science, open data, and open educational resources in making knowledge more accessible. Prof. Walsh stressed that removing barriers to knowledge and building partnerships across government, academia, civil society, and communities can strengthen progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
For young professionals and Green Fellows, his message was clear: build strong networks, know what you want to contribute, seek out experienced partners, and keep pursuing opportunities despite rejection.
